Story

"Every couple of years I get fired up enough to go on a long distance cycle, mostly solo, making the route up as I go along and in a good cause. Last time I cycled from Bristol to our most Westerly church, at Roseland in Cornwall.  Unfortunately, I underestimated the hills, and on two consecutive days I reached my destinations in the pitch black
accompanied by the hooting of curious owls! I raised over £900.

This time, I want to head out from my own front door in Windsor and
cycle a distance that will really challenge me - and will hopefully
prove worthy of sponsorship in aid of historic churches.

This challenge aims to raise £3000. This will be split between an

unrestricted fund that we can use to protect historic churches wherever
the need is greatest and specific conservation work at St Swithun’s in
Worcester, the subject of a major campaign to repair the roof and
establish a distinctive new arts centre; St Bartholomew at Lower
Basildon, where our Friends group are raising funds to repair the church
tower clock; St Peter's in Wolfhampcote, where we will restore a window from its present plastic to clear glass; and St John's in Inglesham, which recently suffered a disastrous lead theft.

I hope you’ll come with me on this journey by following my blogs and

tweets (Twitter hashtag #ColinsCycleTour) and by sponsoring the Dawes and I, as we travel 352 miles (one mile for every one of our churches), visit 20 wonderful sites and meeting 40 of our wonderful volunteers, all in 6 days. I’ll be champing in two of our churches: Chislehampton in Oxfordshire, and Billesley in Warwickshire.

Do let us know if you would like to come along for any part of the ride, I'll be setting off on Wednesday 26th July, during our Church Tourism Week, and finishing on Monday 31st."

About the charity

We are the national charity protecting churches at risk. We care for the churches vested in us by the Church Commissioners of the Church of England, repairing the damage from sometimes years of neglect, and work with local communities to bring them and their stories back to life.
