Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

It’s been 10 years this year since we lost mam to Motor Neurone Disease, just 10 months after diagnosis. The disease robbed her of her ability to walk, move, swallow and talk. MND is progressive, aggressive, terminal. There is still no treatment and no cure. 6 people in the UK die each day from MND, and 6 more are diagnosed.

I miss mam every day and will not stop fighting until there’s a cure. For me, fighting = running. Running helped me hugely after mam’s diagnosis, and I’ve kept going since to raise funds and awareness for the MNDA.

Last year was a pretty busy one with an eventual total of 19 events in 12 months. This year, I said, was going to be quieter, with one main challenge: St Oswald’s 100k Ultra Marathon. That’s
62 miles – all in one go. The thing is, to complete this I need lots of
training, and that means lots of other runs…17 so far, including 5 marathons and a 24-hour relay – but unlike other years, these will all be leading up to the big one on 17th September…

28th February: Cambridge Half Marathon

13th March: Silverstone Half Marathon

2nd April: Oakley 20

24th April: London Marathon

4th Mat: Star Wars Half Marathon

22nd May: Tough Mudder

11th-12th June: Endure 24 (24 hour relay in a team of 5)

3rd July: Great North 10k

16th July: ‘Piece of Cake’ Trail Marathon

20th August: Bad Cow Marathon

21st August: Bad Cow Half Marathon

11th September: Great North Run

17th September: St Oswald’s Ultra Marathon – 100k!!!!

2nd October: Cardiff Half Marathon

16th October: Great Birmingham Run (half
marathon)

23rd October: Leicester Marathon

30th October: Morpeth to Newcastle Marathon

18th November: 6-hour Somme Centenary Challenge

MND is a progressive neuro-degenerative disease that attacks the upper and lower motor neurones. Degeneration of these motor neurones leads to weakness and wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss of mobility in the limbs, and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing.

The MNDA supports families and sufferers by providing equipment such as Lightwriters, adapted chairs etc. to enable those with the disease to maintain an independent life as far as is possible, and to ease some of the symptoms where this can be done. They also fund important research into the disease, in the hope of one day ridding the world of this cruel disease.

A lot more training, a lot more hard work - but every step, a step closer to a cure...please help me get closer to that goal!

MND is a disease that nobody should have to experience. Please support us to raise awareness, and as much funding as we possibly can, so that MND becomes a thing of the past. Until there is a cure, there is no finish line!
