Story

This page is in fond memory of my late husband Paul Whittaker.  As many of you  know Paul very sadly passed away on the evening of December 20th 2006 at Chaucer Hospital, Canterbury.

Paul was taken seriously ill in December 2004 when he was diagnosed with a cancerous inoperable brain tumour.   An initial biopsy was taken to establish the type of tumour and after lengthy periods of radiotherapy and chemotherapy Paul underwent a major operation in 2005 where it was possible to debulk part of the tumour and implant revolutionary chemotherapy wafers into the remains of it.   Paul's recovery appeared to be going well and for a short period he was able to return to work on a part time basis.  However Paul's recovery stumbled and a progressive brain tumour was diagnosed, non-invasive Gamma knife surgery was undertaken. Paul's health continued to deteriorate and a scan in early December 2006 showed that the tumour had continued to grow quickly and beyond the capabilities of current treatment methods.

My brother David and I decided to enter the Great North Run,  to raise money for the Brain and Spine Foundation.  Paul was a supporter of the Foundation and had hoped to walk the GNR in 2007.

Paul's Neurosurgeon was Mr Peter Hamlyn who is the founder of the Brain and Spine foundation charitable organisation.
