Story
Filey Dams is a super wetland site nestled on the western fringes of Filey town. The site is leased by the Trust from Scarborough Borough Council and is managed in partnership with Filey Bird Observatory and Group (FBOG).
Recently, the Trust has carried out access improvements, including replacing the pond dipping platform to allow local children to investigate the minibeasts that can be found in the wetlands and we are soon renewing the interpretation. This work was funded by the Tesco Bags of Life scheme.
Building on this success, FBOG have landed an impressive grant of £31,000 from Yorventure through the Landfill Communities Fund, a fantastic achievement. This grant will bring much needed habitat improvements to this site including new wader scrapes with a water control system to enable the water levels to be managed carefully. This will ensure the water can be dropped down in late summer and autumn, exposing muddy edges, rich in invertebrates, perfect food for hungry migrant wading birds. Funding will also enable improvements to the fencing which enable cattle to be turned out to graze the grasslands, keeping them in good condition for wildlife, and maintaining the open landscape, preferred by the wetland birds.
Filey Dams currently has two very old viewing hides. They have served their purpose well, but are not at all inviting to visitors and especially families with children. We have been offered a generous £15,000 funding to create a bespoke facility aimed at all visitors including families with children, so that everybody can enjoy this beautiful place and the wildlife it attracts. If we can raise the £5,000, we can release funds to enable a bright, open building to be installed, perfect for inspiring the next generation about wildlife, and providing shelter for those visiting to use the dipping platform in case the weather turns. Imaginative interpretation will ensure all visitors can learn about wildlife the site's wildlife too.
