Story
The TRIBE x Maverick communities are fearless, bold and push their limits. This November, they’re joining forces to Run Free and fight modern slavery.
Our ability to run and explore the trails, as we do, is a privilege which many people are not free to enjoy. We’re taking the opportunity to Run Free as a chance to change this.
The Cause: Modern Slavery is taking place across the UK. In fact, the Home Office estimates there are at least 10,000 - 13,000 people living in slavery in the UK.
It takes many forms, from sexual exploitation to forced labour at pop-up car washes and high-street nail bars.
HOW DO TRAFFICKERS CONTROL THEIR VICTIMS? Modern slaves may not be physically chained or trapped but their traffickers are still able to manipulate and control them… It is fear and desperation which keeps people trapped in slavery today. This may include debt bondage, fear of deportation or threats to their family.
WHO IS VULNERABLE? There is no typical victim of slavery – victims are of all genders and all ages, ethnicity and nationalities. However, it is typically more common amoung the most vulnerable and within minority or socially excluded groups. Poverty, lack of education, unstable socio-political conditions and war are some of the key drivers.
The Aim: Our 2018 fundraising target is £100,000 to support two outstanding font line anti-slavery projects:
Ella’s Home is an East-London safe-house providing rehabilitation, accommodation, and support for women exiting situations of trafficking and exploitation. In partnership with Luminary Bakery, they also offer training and employment opportunities, helping survivor’s to regain independence.
Snowdrop Project is a Sheffield-based charity and one of the first in the UK to provide long-term follow-on support for survivors. They work with clients on an individual basis to ensure their personal and complex needs are met.
