Story
Tuesday 28th November is Giving Tuesday, when we turn our attention towards what we can do to 'give back' locally. A team at the Albany will be do a 'static' bike round the perimeter of Lewisham 5 times, in The Albany foyer, to raise money for our community giving scheme A Theatre Trip for Every Child. That is 175 km in just one day!
A Theatre Trip for Every Child is about community cohesion, it's about local people and businesses, investing in the future of young people and the future of Lewisham. It's about the leaders of today supporting the leaders of tomorrow. 'Every Child' is a charitable campaign that will provide a free ticket for every five-year-old in the borough to go to the theatre. Jude Law and Noma Dumezweni are our Patrons.
Engaging with theatre is proven to benefit children in so many ways including:
• Promoting creativity
• Helping children understand themselves and their world, and in connecting more fully with their environment
• Developing creativity in children allows them to think outside the box
Giving the gift of theatre is an experience that can last a lifetime.
Many children living in Lewisham are unable to experience arts and cultural activity due to barriers including cost, travel and lack of cultural capital deeply ingrained through longstanding deprivation in the borough. Arts and culture have a huge role to play in promoting wellbeing, stimulating community cohesion and tackling social isolation. Theatre gives children the opportunity to see life through a different lens and in doing so, it opens the doors of possibility for them creatively and socially. Investment in the creative wellbeing of children promotes social cohesion and a sense of empowerment.
