Story

SPACE Stockport is an ADHD parent support group in Greater Manchester. We offer advice and support to parents and carers in a friendly, open environment where they can meet other people who understand the challenges of raising a child with ADHD.This October to celebrate ADHD Awareness Month, the SPACE Team are going to take part in a 2000 metre, four person zip line across a valley in Wales. This is as good a time as any to mention that three quarters of the team are terrified of heights, but to raise awareness of ADHD, we're willing to take on the Titan. We are all parents of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and we know first hand how ignorance and misinformation impacts on the lives of young people and their families. The playground can be a lonely place if your child has problems managing their behaviour during the school day and it's important for parents to know that there is a group of people just like them that they can connect with. ADHD Awareness month is a great time to correct the myths and share some facts about ADHD. It's also a good way to let parents know that if they need information, advice or signposting to local services, that groups like ours exist. In addition to our existing monthly meetups and online support, we'd like to offer more to our parents, so we're raising money to make some of our ideas a reality. We like to dream big, but we need the funds to back it up.ADHD isn't necessarily a bad thing but the problems caused by a lack of knowledge and support for children and their families is. We want to do more to support local families and raise awareness of the facts about ADHD and if the four of us need to hurtle screaming down a zipwire across a Welsh valley to do that, then so be it.
