Story
The inaugural ForRangers Ultra – a partnership between ForRangers, Beyond the Ultimate and Save the Rhino International – takes place between 1 and 5 August 2018 in Kenya, the spiritual home of long-distance running.
With a 230-km route that passes through the heart of rhino conservation – from Lewa Wildlife Conservancy through the foothills of Mt Kenya to Borana and Ol Jogi Conservancies and the undulating plains of Ol Pejeta Conservancy on the Equator – runners will experience raw nature in the wild. Along the route, they can expect to see not just rhinos, but also elephants, lions, buffalo, zebra, impala and giraffe – and even leopards if they can stay awake long enough.
For their own protection, the ultra-runners will encounter armed rangers at each 10-km checkpoint and water station, and at frequent intervals along the route, giving them opportunity to meet and learn about the men who risk their lives to protect the world’s most endangered animals. Overnight camps in the four conservancies, under star-filled skies with the sounds of nocturnal beasts, will allow them to live in the bush 24/7, just like the rangers.
Are you bold enough to take on the mileage, the altitude, the big game and camping in the wilds of Kenya? And will you help us raise funds for the rangers who protect the world’s wildlife? Fulfil your lifetime’s ambition: run an ultra, in Africa, and save the rhino!
