Story
It's estimated that 55,000 people in the UK are living with a brain tumour. Every 2 hours someone receives a diagnosis and every week a family loses a child.
The causes of brain tumours are not understood and the statistics are harsh, yet research into therapies, and ultimately a cure, for brain tumours receives just 1% of all national spending on cancer research. At this rate of spend research teams will not be retained, and we will remain at least 100 years away from a cure.
The calibre of Plymouth’s research into brain tumours was recognised in 2014 when the University was chosen as one of only three UK Research Centres of Excellence for charity Brain Tumour Research.
Professor Oliver Hanemann, neurologist and Professor in clinical neurobiology at Plymouth, and his team, are having a profound impact on the potential for effective drug therapies for patients with this condition.
A key innovation is fast track: taking laboratory-based research to clinical trials quickly - improving the chance of effective new therapies.
We invite you to join us as we try and raise the funds for a new researcher to join the brain tumour team. We already have half the funds raised thanks to our generous donors, and now need just £35,000 to reach our target.
