Story
Based in one of the most challenging and deprived areas of London, the Pedro Club in Hackney has been supporting the community since 1929 when it was founded by Baroness Elliot of Harwood. Former British and European Super-Middleweight Champion James Cook currently runs the club, and was recently awarded an MBE for his services to youth justice in Hackney.
Our aim is to act as a resource for children and young people by providing advice and organising programmes of physical, educational and other activities as a means of relieving unemployment, advancing education and enabling young people to participate in society as independent and mature individuals. Our club does not have a specific catchment area but we attract a significant number of members from Clapton Park, Millfield and Nye Devan estates in the E5 area. Whilst the benefits for those who attend the club are clear to see, we also believe the services provided by the Pedro club improves the community atmosphere and spirit for all local residents and visitors.
