"300,000 women dying every year in pregnancy/childbirth is a tragedy. That 297,000 of these deaths are avoidable is what we call "woman-slaughter". There are simple interventions which could save around a third of these deaths and our organisation is unique in what we can do to achieve this reduction".
CEO, Angela Gorman.
Life for African Mothers is a Maternal Health charity aiming to make birth safer in Sub Saharan Africa by providing: medication to treat post-partum haemorrhage (PPH), midwifery training and supplying baby clothes. By providing medication to treat one of most life-threatening complications of child birth, coupled with midwifery training we have been able to support hospitals and health centres in Sub-Saharan Africa and see huge reductions in maternal mortality over the past 12 years.
Over the past 3 years we have sent out 1.35 millions tablets of Misoprostol to treat PPH across 6 different countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. This means around 400,000 women have been treated. If a woman does not receive the medication, she could bleed to death within minutes.
In the last year we have trained over 400 midwives in Liberia. We enhance the skills of trained midwives with the most up to date Emergency Obstetric Health Care in order to best care for mother and baby. This is essential work for a safe delivery.
Please support Life for African Mothers. We have been struggling lately due to our core funder pulling out because of Brexit and we are at risk of bringing operations to a halt in July 2018. Rockets need fuel, and we require £1600 per month to cover our basic operational costs. This amount will cover office admin costs and two part-time staff members. The staff members will be actively fundraising in order to supply the medication to prevent PPH and provide midwifery training. It is quite simple, if we do not supply the medications, and the midwifery training where we work, no one will.
