Story

MRI is an area that supports nearly all care groups within the hospital and the local healthcare economy. The additional scanner will influence and contribute to the care and management of a vast number of patients from the modest GP direct access to the highly efficient complex cancer pathways.

An additional modern and technically advanced MRI scanner will give massive benefits to all patients, including:

  • RSH will be able to offer a cardiac MRI service
  • Crohns patients will benefit from a full MRI small bowel imaging service. MRI is the gold standard for this complex clinical condition and greatly effects treatment.
  • All patients will get the fantastic diagnostic image quality expected from a modern imaging department – MRI is a rapidly advancing technology at the forefront of radiology’s capabilities.
  • New scanners have wider, lighter, airier bores that are also shorter making them feel less like ‘going into a tunnel’, especially important to young, claustrophobic, or larger patients

About the charity

The League of Friends cares for, and provides support for, patients of the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, and we have been doing so since 1966 The League of Friends supports the work of the hospital in so many ways and is always there for patients, relatives and staff. The 200 or so volunteers in our 4 shops offer a smile and a cup of tea when needed, along with other refreshments. Confectionary, newspapers and toiletries can be purchased and are taken round the wards daily for the comfort and convenience of patients. Our regularly changed flower arrangements brighten up entrances and waiting areas. All profits from the shops and every penny from donations, legacies and enjoyable fundraising events are used to buy equipment for the RSH. We are completely autonomous so, in conversation with Trust staff, we decide where the money entrusted to us is spent. Over the last two years in the region of £1.5m has been spent on much needed equipment to improve patient care.
