Story
Lancashire Wildlife Trust has been working to safeguard the Red Squirrels in Merseyside and Lancashire for over 20 years. But due to impacts on funding during the Coronavirus pandemic, our work is now under threat.
Sadly, the project will come to an end in September if we can't find enough funds to continue.
There are positive signs that the population is recovering from the most recent outbreak of squirrel pox in 2018-2019, but it is critical our work continues at this time. Together with volunteers and communities, our work has seen the population recover and flourish after the squirrel pox outbreak in 2008.
With your help now, we can continue this legacy. Many people have found great comfort in nature during the recent lockdown and we want to ensure that continues; That while walking in the pinewoods, you will hear the sound of a red squirrel scrambling up a tree trunk and if you’re lucky, catch a glimpse of that bushy red tail as it disappears. Or if you spot a shower of pine cone scales raining down from the canopy, you can look up and see a red squirrel looking right back at you.
We were in the process of securing funds for the project, however the progress of these has now been delayed by at least 12 months. Our existing funding ends in August – just under a months’ time.
Please donate to help support the Trust in continuing our work to safeguard our population of Red Squirrels.
