Story
There is currently no cohesive multi disciplinary rehabilitative service for children and young adults anywhere in Wales, in addition, psychology input and hydrotherapy are extremely scarce resources on their own. This affects not only children and young adults with a brain injury, but also many other neurological conditions.
Kyle’s Goal is establishing a paediatric neurodisability rehabilitation service in Cardiff, to serve families affected by neurological injuries and disorders in Wales. The current closest centre is based in Surrey, England, requiring families to travel or be separated from their children in order for them to receive the medical care and rehabilitation support they need. The service will include a dedicated rehabilitation team that can support a wide spectrum of children requiring neurological rehabilitation. The service will have specific pathways, entry and discharge criteria, care pathway from hospital to home, and complementary support to community based services. Services will be provided locally for children and families in dedicated residential and outreach services. The service will represent high value for money, highly specialist and expert care, a consistent service within Wales and a leading example of collaborative partnership. The name of the organisation, Kyle’s Goal, is inspired Kyle Beere. In 2009 at the age of 12, Kyle suffered from an acquired brain injury that left him needing the support of two carers around the clock. As part of his initial treatment, Kyle spent three months at The Children’s Trust in Surrey, three hours away from his home in Cardiff. Kyle’s Goal does not want this to be the case for other children and their families.
