Story
Tudor Gardens, one of Jaffray Care’s supported living facilities in Erdinton, Birmingham, comprises three, 5 bedroomed bungalows designed for adult clients with a wide spectrum of developmental difficulties including complex health and challenging behavioural needs. In order to benefit residents, other service users from across the Jaffray family and where appropriate members from the wider community, Jaffray Care wishes to combine and utilise the extensive grounds at the rear of the bungalows to create The Sensory Experience Project @ Tudor Gardens. The Sensory Experience Project will comprise several zones where service users will be able to travel through each area specifically designed with developmental difficulties and issues in mind. There will be a sensory garden, where through specialist landscaping and planting, all five senses will be evoked to promote both calming and stimulating feelings. The area will be accessible to all, including those with mobility issues and will have raised beds, soft flooring under foot, ‘mood’ lighting throughout, wind chimes, lighting walls and sensory walls etc. As well as benefiting from the therapeutic properties of the sensory garden, service users will be able to take ownership of the garden by potting plants, weeding and cutting flowers etc. This will encourage independence, wellbeing and provide a sense of achievement. In addition to the sensory garden there will be a vegetable garden, again, where service users can learn about growing food, again, taking ownership and gaining a sense of wellbeing, pride and achievement.
