Human Rights Watch will be represented by 30 runners in the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon 2017 to raise awareness of the effects of environmental degradation and to fundraise for the Environment and Human Rights Division.
The Human Rights Watch team, which includes staff, members of the Human Rights Network, and some of our closest supporters, will run through four of London’s glorious Royal Parks - Hyde Park, The Green Park, St James’s Park and Kensington Gardens - and past some of the capital’s most historic landmarks, including Buckingham Palace, Horse Guards Parade and the Royal Albert Hall.
The Human Rights Watch team is running to expose how the lack of regulation and enforcement of industrial and artisanal mining, large-scale dams, deforestation, clean water and sanitation systems, and heavily polluting industries can lead to a host of human rights violations. We are increasingly prioritising research on the human rights impact of climate-harming activities.
Human Rights Watch accepts no government funding and relies on the generosity of individual donors and institutional foundations. We are appealing to our global network of supporters to help us fund the work of the environment and human rights division. Your contribution will help us to protect the environment and humanity. Our work has achieved impact, helping move:
• International mining and tobacco companies to take steps to address human rights abuses throughout their supply chains (Barrick Gold, Philip Morris International);
• More than 100 countries to adopt binding international standards to reduce mercury emissions and better protect affected communities;
• Countries negotiating the 2015 global climate treaty to incorporate language that addresses protecting people’s human rights.
