Story
Lots of people locally will have heard of our campaign to regain access to Castle Cove Beach after the council removed the steps in 2013. We are nearly there !! People from outside the area have contacted us through Facebook to tell us about their family connection to the beach which often goes back through the generations!
The steps will be wooden, four flights, 34 steps in all, planned to be safe and secure with handrails. The most important thing and why they are a little more costly is that they are structurally engineered so that should further erosion occur they can easily be dismantled and relocated.
The sandy beach is beautiful it looks out over Portland Harbour and has been used by families and their children for over 80 years without any difficulty. It is at the end of a public footpath which leads off Old Castle Road in Weymouth , Dorset.
In 2013 the local council removed the steps citing health and safety issues without any consultation or discussion with the local residents. Since then local councillors and Friends of Castle Cove Beach Charity have been campaigning for its reinstatement. After considerable effort and hard work the charity has now secured a lease for the land from the landowners for 99 years and planning permission for the steps. In addition we have applied for the steps to be part of the public footpath which runs to the top of the steps from Old Castle Road. In the first instance Dorset County Council have made an order to modify the Definitive Map and Statement of Public Rights of Way. There then follows a legal process of consultation and decision.
However the good news is that we don't need to wait for the public right of way to be granted to build the steps and we need to raise the money. We will also be applying for two grants now we have the lease and the planning permission.
