Story
As part of our celebrations we need your help to transform our external space from a grey and concreted area to a fully accessible multi-sensory environment that our 92 service users can enjoy, explore and engage with independently, using light, sound, movement and vibrations. Our service users love exploring through noise and music so it's important that our plans included static musical instruments such as bongos, chimes, symbols and electrical style keyboard. Our plans have been developed to meet the varied needs of our service users such as siblings Cardell who have been attending day care services at Focus for 12 years due to visual impairment and other disabilities or learning difficulties. Their father, said: “Life would be very difficult without the service that Focus provides. They would go Saturday and Sunday as well as during the week if they could. “They would be lost without it and would probably regress if they didn’t have this service.
The needs of most of the adults that attend our day care services can often limit their opportunities to engage or interact with their surroundings, especially the outdoors. With your support our sensory learning environment will break down barriers and provide opportunities to improve physical mobility, creativity, social interaction and greater levels of independence as they can access all the different sensory elements within the area at their own individual pace.
Designs also include; a colourful and tactile pathway that is flat for those with difficulties with mobility and accessible for wheelchair users. A wheelchair accessible wobble bridge which will enable our service users to experiment with movement and vibration. Aromas from plants and sounds of wind chimes will stimulate senses which can promote mental and physical relaxation.
To create all of this will cost £65,000 and we need your support through donations or taking on fundraising challenges to help us reach our target!
