Story
Druglink are working to develop a Hertfordshire-wide education scheme committed to providing young people with the tools and knowledge they need to make informed decisions about alcohol and other drug use. We will also ensure that anyone connected with young people receive the information they need to guide and support.
Secondary school children in England are now more likely to have tried drugs than cigarettes, according to NHS Digital's 2016 survey - 24% of 11-15 year-old's had tried recreational drugs at least once in their lives, a 9% rise on 2014. Between Apr 18 and Feb 19 in Hertfordshire there were 89 under 18s in specialist substance misuse services (NDTMS Treatment Performance Report). There were 156 drug offences committed by children aged between 10 and 17 in Hertfordshire in the 12 months to Mar 18. (Youth Justice annual statistics for 2017 to 2018 for England and Wales).
Our new Young People’s Education Scheme will see us visiting a variety of settings including schools, youth clubs and sports groups, working with year 6 upwards. Topics will include:
- Raising awareness of the effects of alcohol and other drugs- (not only physical and mental health, but impacts on the future through youth offending and involvement in gangs
- Responding to life events/ situations where peer-pressure could negatively impact behaviour
- Managing stress, its triggers and promoting well-being
- Raising awareness of drink & drug driving to promote safety
- Access to signposting, knowing what help is available and how to get it
Sessions for parents/ teacher/ support staff will include: Providing awareness around alcohol and other drugs; Helping teachers and parents “spot the signs” of substance use; Advice on the help available and how to access it.
Any donation will help make this scheme possible and will enable us to help our young people make informed decisions about substance use.
