Story
Why not join us at the 5th ASDA sponsored Sleepout on Friday 20th October 2017, 7pm-7am in ASDA Spondon car park? Experience what it's like to sleep outside exposed to the elements and raise money so that homeless people in our city this winter don't have to.
As well as dry, secure overnight accommodation, Derby Churches Nightshelter offers a warm welcome, an evening meal and breakfast and lots of support to help many people to find a more permanent solution to their homeless situation.
Over the last 4 years nearly 1000 different people have stayed in the Nightshelter, run by Derby City Mission. We are grateful to the 8 churches who offer their buildings for free, and this last year the 300+ volunteers who offer their time to help. The donations of clothing and food, and financial support have also been very much appreciated. But as we begin to prepare for this coming winter, again we look to raise the finance required.
It costs £100,000 to run the Nightshelter for 4 months (Dec- March)
£20 would provide a sleeping bag for a guest
£15 a rucksack for their belongings
£2 for an evening meal and breakfast
£10 a mobile phone to help them keep in contact with employers, accommodation options, and benefits
£700 would pay for the Nightshelter for one night - it is open in total for 121 nights
We rely solely on donations and so the ASDA Sleepout is a much-needed part of our fundraising plans each year. We would love to see more people take part, and more money raised, as unfortunately the situation for many people, especially the homeless community, gets worse not better.
