Story
It's our 5th Birthday! Can you help us to celebrate?
DanceSyndrome is a local charity based in the North West. The charity was started by Jen Blackwell and her mum Sue after 10 years of unsuccessfully searching for community dance opportunities for Jen, who happens to have Down's syndrome. They knew that many people were in the same situation, excluded because of a disability, so in 2009 they set up a social enterprise to provide opportunities for people with and without disabilities to work together to deliver community dance workshops. On 14th February 2013, their growing social enterprise became a registered charity, DanceSyndrome.
Five years on, DanceSyndrome provides inclusive dance workshops and leadership training for people with and without disabilities. Our dancers also perform live at special events across the UK with the aim of inspiring people and demonstrating that people with disabilities can live a life of their choosing and follow their dreams.
All our activity is led and informed by people with learning disabilities. DanceSyndrome gives people self-belief, respect and value through our philosophy of ‘anything is possible even though you have a learning disability’. We help people to improve their confidence, communication skills and their health, as well as providing a vital opportunity for having fun, being happy, building friendships and developing careers for people often excluded from mainstream dance.
DanceSyndrome is continuing to grow and to become well known and respected. We are successfully changing perceptions of disability and actively campaigning for a more inclusive society. We’re changing lives, unlocking potential & challenging perceptions with our “ability, not disability” approach!
As a small, local charity, we rely on donations from supporters who see the real value in what we do. Would you consider giving us a birthday gift to help us to continue our work?
We really appreciate your support!
