Story
Our CMT Kids Weekends have been developed as a way to allow kids with CMT to meet, socialise, share experiences and above all, be “normal” for a while and achieve all those things that other kids take for granted.
The Background:
The Young People's Weekend was started in 1992, when we decided to take a small party of children with CMT to Centre Parcs for the weekend, funded by Children in Need.
Since then, we've tried to do a similar weekend every year. We've been to Butlins at Skegness; the Bendrigg Trust Centre in Kendal, Cumbria; and latterly the Calvert Trust Centre on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake, near Keswick in the Lake District. The focus is now on activity weekends - allowing kids of between 12 and 25 the chance to experience rock climbing, abseiling, zip wire, archery, canoeing and other equally scary pursuits!
These centres specifically cater to disabled people, so they have specialist knowledge and training to ensure that the weekends are a complete success.
Some quotes for you:
From Sarah:
"Having support and other people to lean on. We don't all stay close to each other but always a message away. Will never forget my first weekend to my last. Defo the best years of growing up"
From Jane:
" My favourite thing about this weekend is meeting so many wonderful people and having a good laugh but also being able to talk about our CMT with someone who understands. And the challenging each other but knowing it's okay if we can't do it. Basically the weekends are the best"
