Story
Blood cancer patients from all over south Wales are treated in the Haematology and Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit at University Hospital of Wales.
External assessors rate the Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit as providing excellent care. However, recent reports also concluded that the unit, now more than 30 years old, is no longer adequate. It needs to be bigger to provide more beds, for every room to have an en-suite bathroom, and redesigned to better ensure dignity and privacy for everyone during treatment.
Our #TeamHaem Appeal aims to support the rebuild of the entire unit, which will include:
• a specialist Outpatient clinic to reduce risk of infection
• an expanded Day Centre for chemotherapy treatment for day patients
• a new Haematology ward with ten extra beds
• a new Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit with facilities for ambulatory and inpatient treatment
• further integration of the Cardiff Cancer Research UK Centre, led by Professor Oliver Ottmann from Cardiff University
Including research facilities closer to the increased bed space will help ensure our patients receive the most innovative care available.
Your donation will support the costs of furnishing the new space, purchasing brand new medical equipment, and ensuring every patient has access to a functional kitchen.
These extras will help make sure blood cancer patients have a better experience during their time in hospital.
