Story
University Hospital Llandough is now the second biggest hospital in Wales, and is changing from mainly short patient stays to treating many more longer-term inpatients.
Some of these patients are from the new Hafan y Coed (Haven of Trees) Adult Mental Health Unit. Others are older people and their carers using the five-days-a-week dementia support service. The All Wales Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre is in Llandough, where adults with CF who are pre-lung transplant will often be cared for as inpatients. People recovering from brain and spinal injury from all over South Wales can be in rehabilitation for more than 3 years, and the hospital becomes a 'home-from-home' for their families and visitors.
Ein Berllan - Our Orchard will be a project with several phases. It will begin by planting the orchards and a shelter belt of native trees, which will be completed in around two years. It is proven that connecting with nature and wildlife increases our physical and mental wellbeing; thank you so much for contributing to this space in our hospitals.
All patients, and especially our older patients, will benefit from Ein Berllan - Our Orchard. The orchard will be a valuable space for people who need some time away from the noise and bustle of a ward; fresh air and natural light can aid with recovery, as well as the benefit of seeing visitors and family away from the bedside.
Your support for Ein Berllan - Our Orchard will help create a space with trees and allotments that our patients, visitors, staff and the local community can enjoy. We have been lucky enough to have the support of the Mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan, Tesco’s Bags of Help Scheme, and sponsorship from our Tinsel 5km Run event at Llandough Hospital before Christmas, but we can't do it without the backing of the community. No NHS money will be spent on Ein Berllan - Our Orchard; every penny will come from donations.
