Zimbabwe holds one of Southern Africa’s last strongholds of lions, however human-wildlife conflict, habitat loss and poaching pose a serious threat to the survival of this fragile species.
This project aims to determine population status and movements of lions in Matusadona National Park. The last census in 2005 suggested that just 28 individuals remained. This was a decrease from nearly 90 in 1998, raising concerns over the population’s long-term viability. In a bid to ensure species conservation, daily research provides data on environmental and human-induced pressures facing Matusadona’s lions. Satellite collars provide an animal's exact location up to 16 times a day. This information directly contributes to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority’s conservation and management plans for this apex predator.
The funds you help us raise will be used to:
•Purchase satellite collars to enable additional lions to be monitored
•Cover the costs of fuel and vehicle maintenance
