UPDATE: BURKINA FASO REFUGEE CRISIS
There are currently about 1,300,000 "internally displaced people" (refugees) in Burkina, who have fled jihadist violence in the north, and who are settling further south. They mostly come with little in the way of possessions, and are in need of food, shelter, and other basics (see main photo).
We are working with our partners in Burkina to help the most vulnerable among the refugees in the areas we work, and bring targeted and appropriate help to those in need.
This will be our main poverty relief campaign at present. Anything you can give will be a great help. Thank you.
Other ways we help:
In Burkina, 45% live below the poverty line of $1.25/day. Many want to work, but are hindered by poor rains and soils, lack of resources, access to markets etc. Others suffer with sickness, failed harvests, etc
TARGETED EMERGENCY AID. In an emergency, we work with local churches to provide food, medical help, or other urgently-needed assistance
Example: In one town, after heavy rains, houses collapsed, crops were destroyed, malaria and disease were rife. We worked with the local church to provide food, blankets, clothes, and other help.
INCOME-GENERATING ACTIVITY. Helping individuals develop income-generating activities to enable them to work their way out of poverty
COMMUNITY GROUP ACTION. Grants to community groups to relieve a need within the community, or enable them to develop their own poverty-alleviation strategies.
Example: We helped repair a small reservoir, to help villagers grow vegetables for sale to provide for their families.
