Story

Meet Zephyr: our happy, dancing, bubble-chasing four-year-old, who lights up every room with his big, dimpled smile. He loves being outside, moving his body in every way he can, making people laugh, and playing with his letters and numbers, which he adores just as much as splashing about in the pool.

When Zephyr was just three weeks old, an ear infection led to encephalitis. He spent five days in NICU and a further five weeks in hospital before he could finally come home and was subsequently diagnosed with Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy. Since then, his determination has carried him further than anyone expected, but the development of his body, movement, and communication remain the biggest challenges standing between him and independence.

Words don't always come easily for Zephyr, so he uses Eyegaze technology to communicate, letting his eyes do the talking when his voice can't. Getting his educational syllabus onto his Eyegaze system will be critical in helping him reach his own, unbelievable potential, especially given how much he already loves his letters and numbers.

Alongside this, Zephyr's therapy team believes that specific, intensive hydrotherapy could make a real difference to his physical development, building strength, control and confidence in a way that land-based therapy alone cannot. He already loves the water, so this is a therapy he will look forward to, not dread.

This kind of intensive support isn't funded by the council, so we're raising £10,000 to give Zephyr both the hydrotherapy programme his therapists recommend and the Eyegaze support that will let him learn and communicate at his own remarkable level.

Every step forward brings Zephyr closer to the independence he is so determined to reach. With your help, we can give him the best possible chance at the life he deserves: on his own two feet, dancing, laughing, learning, and showing off that smile.

7.5% of all donations to Tree of Hope in relation to this appeal will be allocated to the general charitable purposes of Tree of Hope to cover our core operating costs.

If we raise insufficient funds, or surplus funds, then the funds will be used, if appropriate, to fund support for our child’s needs in accordance with Tree of Hope’s charitable objects. If in those circumstances we are unable to use all or part of the funds for the benefit of our child in accordance with Tree of Hope’s charitable objectives, then any funds that cannot be used will be transferred to be used for the general charitable purposes of Tree of Hope.
