Help us build a school in Jordan!

We're building a new, permanent school structure where our temporary education centre currently sits. The building will include four classrooms, allowing us to expand our current teaching capacity, and will provide a much better learning environment.

Story

Since 2017, we've supported an education centre for children in Zaa'tari Village, Jordan. In Jordan, refugee children are now able to attend state school however, since the schools are so oversubscribed, most operate on a half-day basis.

The education centre, managed by our partners at Acting For Change International provides supplementary lessons in Arabic, Maths and English for children aged 4-15 for three mornings per week. The aim is to help give the students the best possible start for when they attend their state school classes in the afternoon.

For years, the makeshift education centre was regularly forced to relocate, as local people bought up the land where it stood for their homes or businesses. In 2017, we helped to purchase the land on which the education centre sits, enabling the children to have a stable location for their studies. Lessons currently take place inside temporary containers but the plan was always to build something more suitable and permanent

Well, now we're ready!

We've had plans drawn up and been granted permission to build a new, permanent, school building on our existing plot of land.

The building will include four classrooms (allowing us to expand our current teaching capacity), a staff/planning room for teachers, a playground and a separate toilet block.

The new school will have more regulated temperatures (the current classrooms get very hot in summer and cold in winter!) and all the facilities that the children need. It'll be a much better learning environment.

The Plan

Building a whole school is no mean feat! We've broken it down into 8 key stages and are aiming for the build to be completed within 6 months. The build is being managed by our partners at Acting for Change International and we're checking in with the team to manage progress on a weekly basis.

Stage 1 - Relocation of current buildings - £1,500 - COMPLETED

*** Stage 2 - Paperwork, planning and land preparation *** £1,500 needed

Stage 3 - Foundations - £2,500

Stage 4 - Main structure including walls and roof - £12,000

Stage 5 - Plaster and tiling - £5,000

Stage 6 - Doors and windows - £5,000

Stage 7 - Interior decoration and furniture - £3,000

Stage 8 - Surrounding wall and playground - £3,000

We focus mainly on helping refugees in transit. We do this by providing frontline evacuations, where conflicts are at their most precarious, and distributing emergency survival aid for refugees on the move. We also work on self-reliance projects, providing formal education for refugee children in Jordan, up-skill adult refugees into employment in the UK and internationally, and build hydroponic farming systems.
