Young Carers Matter Norfolk

Campaign by Voluntary Norfolk

Young carers do incredible things caring for their loved ones, but they need support too! Together we can help young carers across Norfolk find support, feel seen, lighten their load, and give them back precious moments of childhood.

Voluntary Norfolk improves the health and wellbeing of the people and communities of Norfolk. Through our work we hope to achieve our vision of connected, resilient and compassionate communities where people work together to improve lives.

Story

Meet an amazing young carer

This incredible young carer is 15 years old. She's studying for her GCSEs, worrying about exams like any teenager. But unlike most of her classmates, she has been caring for her mum since she was just two years old.

Every day, she reminds her mum to take medication, cooks’ meals, and helps during seizures. Sometimes she helps her mum wash and use the toilet. When her mum needs her, she stays home from school - balancing her own education with keeping her mum safe.

There are times when she feels completely isolated. When her mum's anxiety gets severe, she carries it all alone - no respite, no break, just her managing everything.

I felt that I was on my own. 1:1 support changed everything for me. After years of struggling to talk about my feelings, I finally found someone who listened. I believe every young carer deserves the same support.

That's why Young Carers Matter Norfolk are here

There are over 6,000 young carers across Norfolk, some as young as 5, quietly managing responsibilities that no child should face alone. We help by providing:

1:1 and group support for young carers

Fun activities where young carers can just be kids

The chance to meet other young carers who truly understand

Wellbeing sessions and mental health support

Career and employability advice for their future

Opportunities to learn new skills

Signposting to helpful resources

Every child deserves to be a child!

Right now, there's another child in Norfolk who needs to know they're not alone.

With your help, we can reach more young carers like the one you've met - giving them the support, connection, and childhood moments they desperately need and deserve.
