Story

Sleep Easy is back!

This year, YMCA Exeter is running a hybrid event with a main event taking place at Exwick Parish Hall, a 'satellite' event happening in Honiton, and virtually with families sleeping out in their own homes. Whether you're with us in-person or joining us from your home, we are all united by one goal to raise money for young people who require supported accommodation. We will be live streaming our event from Exwick, so that wherever you are, you can join in on your computer, smart TV, laptop, tablet or phone from 7pm to 8:30pm. Additionally, for the first time, YMCA Exeter are connecting up with other YMCAs around the UK all participating in Sleep Easy at the same time.

Now in it's 12th year, Sleep Easy allows us to experience one night of what it is like to sleep rough, whatever the weather, and in doing so raises sponsorship to support the work we do. Whether you're joining us in person or choosing to sleep somewhere other than your bed in your own home, this event provides insight of the everyday struggles faced by homeless young people.

Since 2011, YMCA Exeter have provided housing and accommodation support to over 1100 young people, encouraging them to build community networks, find employment and make their place in society. The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a significant increase in both families and young people accessing our services, and we want to be able to respond to this need in the best ways we can. Money raised from Sleep Easy allows us to continue this vital work throughout the city.

Gareth Sorsby, Joint Chief Executive of YMCA Exeter, said:

Last year we had a wonderful variety of ages taking part in Sleep Easy. Children building dens at home or sleeping in tents in their gardens to raise money for local, homeless young people. This year we hope the flexibility of the event will allow anyone to take part - whether live at Exwick Parish Hall or in their own home. Every penny raised will go to support local, young people in need of a permanent home.
