Story
Since January 2023, YMCA North Tyneside's Community Meal campaign has offered warmth, nourishment, and a sense of belonging to our community in North Shields. Our regular meals offer a safe, inclusive space for individuals to connect, socialise, and enjoy a free home-cooked meal.
Our meals have become a cornerstone of the local community, welcoming an average of 30-40 people per session on a Wednesday afternoon. We've seen a diverse range of individuals attend, from those facing tough times to those simply seeking a friendly atmosphere. Our meals have no criteria and are for everyone to enjoy.
To celebrate special occasions, we've hosted community meals tailored to specific holidays. Our Christmas Community Meal saw an overwhelming turnout of over 80 attendees, creating a festive and joyous atmosphere. Similarly, our Eid Community Meal attracted more than 50 people, including many new faces. These events have been instrumental in fostering a sense of belonging and connection within our community.
Recognising the importance of community engagement, we've expanded our meal campaign to include community-focused activities. We have invited various external organisations in to the building to offer information, advice and guidance to our members. This has included free health checks, fuel and energy support as well as other charities and groups who have run sessions. Our recent community meals held at the YMCA's community allotment have promoted outdoor participation and encouraged a deeper connection to the local environment.
The success of our Community Meal Campaign is a testament to the generosity and spirit of our community. Your support has been invaluable in ensuring that these vital meals continue to provide essential sustenance and a sense of belonging to those in need. As we approach the winter months, our meals offer an even more important space for the community. With your support we can continue to offer this service for those who access it.
