In 2020, around 4,500 babies in the UK were stillborn or died within four weeks of their lives. Many families dont know this is going to happen, and some dont have anywhere to go and spend time with their babies.

At Ysbyty Gwynedd, we want to change this. The current bereavement suite for families is located on the Maternity Outpatient Assessment Unit where they can hear other expectant families having scans and newborn babies crying.

The new suite, which will be located on the Midwifery Led Unit on a quiet corridor, will cost around £15,000 to complete. The room identified already has a fully functioning wet room that will be great for families who want to spend time with their baby whilst they are in a CuddleCot. The room will also have a kitchenette for families to use which includes a fridge and microwave.

Having an allocated suite already makes a huge difference to families who are going through the most difficult time, however families have said it would be made even more comfortable if it was more secluded. This redevelopment will help families spend time with their babies in a more homely environment, away from the Maternity Unit.
