Story

Gifts to Y.E.S. (Youth Educational Services) touch many lives through our student-led volunteer programs offered in collaboration with local schools and community organizations. Y.E.S. programs are designed to meet local needs and provide our student volunteers with important teamwork and leadership experience. Our programs also help students find a sense of belonging at Cal Poly Humboldt and within the community, an integral component to overall student success. All while performing work they are passionate about!

This program has been the high point of my college career. I have learned a tremendous amount of information about social justice and I feel like a better person because of it. I have also expanded my professional experience so much by working with community partners, volunteers, and participants. Being a director made me feel like I belonged... - Sam Moreno, Study Buddies Director, Spring 2020

One program that's had a meaningful impact on youth and seniors in our community is the Y.E.S. Pen Pal Program. It connects Y.E.S. student volunteers with local 2nd-8th grade students for a digital letter exchange through ConnectED, a collaboration between Cal Poly Humboldt and the Humboldt County Office of Education (HCOE). Student volunteers also exchange letters with senior residents of Eureka in collaboration with the Golden Years Program.

This spring, volunteers in a few Y.E.S programs have returned to community sites, providing our students with important hands-on learning opportunities through Leadership Education and Adventure Program (LEAP), the Juvenile Hall Recreation Program (JHRP), and the Volunteer Opportunities Program (VOP).

We also have three student-led teams creating academic enrichment packets focused on environmental sustainability, math, and language arts for the youth at Jefferson Community Center. Learn more about all our programs and how they impact our Y.E.S. student volunteers.

We couldn't be more proud of the work our students accomplish through their passion, hard work and their dedication to both environmental and social justice. Will you join in and help today? Please make a gift to support their work!
