Story

Tuesday 10th October 2023 is World Porridge Day and we are inviting you to join in our celebrations by hosting a porridge breakfast for your friends, family or colleagues during the week commencing 9th October.

Perhaps you'd like to invite people to your home, hold an event at work or even encourage a friendly local café to get involved?

Simply provide the porridge and a variety of tasty toppings, and ask for donations to African Children's Fund to support Kenyan Porridge Clubs where 2,500 children in 13 primary schools receive a daily mug of porridge at school to reduce absenteeism caused by children working, scavenging or begging for food on the streets.

Food poverty is one of the biggest reasons for school absence in Kenya and this simple programme has seen absenteeism reduce by over 80% in participating schools. What's more, children receiving porridge each day are healthier, perform better in sports and achieve improved examination results, significantly increasing secondary school enrolment.

Each mug of porridge costs just 9p so for every £9 in donations you receive from your World Porridge Day breakfasts, 100 children will receive a nutritious porridge meal rather than having to work, scavenge or beg on the streets.

If we reach our target, that will cover the full costs of the Porridge Clubs for 2,500 children for a day.
