Story
Woodland Heritage was founded in 1994 by Peter Goodwin and Lewis Scott, who quickly secured the backing of a group of environmentally minded, traditional cabinet makers, keen to improve the way in which trees were grown, maintained and harvested in the UK. Nearly 30 years later, Peter and Lewis' 'acorn' of a charity has grown and achieved so much, thanks to the back of people and organisations that believed, and continue to believe in the vision of the two Founders.
To produce fine British hardwood timber, trees need nurturing. Woodlands need good management; trees need pruning and special care to produce high-quality hardwoods.
There is a market for these English classics - oak, ash, beech and walnut - yet for various reasons it largeley remains unharvested while the UK remains the second largest importer of timber. A great opportunity is being missed. Yet there is so much attention and enthusiasm for planting new trees.
Britain's existing woodlands desperately need to be brought back into management, the economics of harvesting fine hardwood timber needs to be squared, and above all we need the support of the great British public. We need your help to launch a major education campaign to spread the good word about sustainable woodland management and silviculture. People need to know that cutting down trees or pruning is good for wood, that trees can grown 'for free' with natural regeneration, and that growing fine timber will have knock-on effects of boosting wildlife and woodland birds.
The opportunities are huge, and they are here now; with your help, Woodland Heritage will be able to take them and in so doing, continue the legacy of our visionary Founders, Peter Goodwin and Lewis Scott.
