Story
Since our doors opened in 1977, The Womens Center has observed Womens Equality Day which commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which granted women the right to vote. Wisconsin was the first state to ratify the amendment in 1919 on its journey to becoming law. Waukeshas own Theodora Youmans was president of the Wisconsin Women Suffrage Association at the time and played a significant role in securing support for the new amendment!
Our five Founding Mothers were active members of the National Organization of Women (NOW) and they too fought for the rights of women - specifically those victimized from domestic violence and sexual assault. The Womens Center has been observing Womens Equality Day as a tribute to them since our early days. It also serves as a reminder that there is still much more work to be done to achieve equality for all people.
"I'm truly appreciative of all staff and the help that they have and continue to give me. I would 100% be lost without this place." - Survivor
We encounter our clients on one of the worst days of their lives, whether they are fleeing an abusive home, have been sexually assaulted, or have just been told their child has been victimized. We have made it our mission to ensure that through our advocacy and care, no one has to navigate that time alone. Your gift ensures that our doors continue to stay open 24/7, that our staff is trained to deal with whatever situation a client brings to them, and that our agency is always a safe and inviting place to be
