Story
Haxby & Wigginton Youth & Community Association are embarking upon an exciting chapter in the charitys history, as Oaken Grove Community Centre is currently being extended to accommodate the new Haxby and Wigginton Explore Library. This is due to be completed in Autumn 2022. When the centre reopens we will have a vibrant and welcoming hub for the local community to enjoy, with improved toilets and community rooms, a reading cafe and a full size library.
However, due to the extension, our garden will be largely inaccessible to those in a wheelchair, as the garden is on a steep incline, which will be cut into to allow a pathway and seating area to be laid around the outside of the building. This will result in the garden being at a higher level and the original pathway into it lost.
Due to construction costs escalating, the addition of soft landscaping has unfortunately not been included in the overall building scheme, however for us as a charity, and specifically for our centre users, it is a priority for us to ensure that this issue is addressed quickly.
Ensuring that our activities, and the community centre itself, is fully accessible to anyone who wishes to attend is a priority for the charity. We are continually seeking to break down boundaries to inclusion; whether this is physical, emotional, educational, financial, and more.
