Story
A welcome begins before anyone reaches the door. Yet hazardous pathways, broken steps and dark, unlit areas of Bradford Cathedral’s grounds (otherwise known as the precinct), stand in the way. Our Welcoming In project will fix this, installing new efficient lighting across our precinct, resurfacing paths, adding new handrails, and repairing broken kerbstones and steps. New information panels will guide and inform visitors, while restored historic ironwork, including the Bradford Cathedral crest, will help our entrance shine again. And for the first time our iconic West Entrance will have lit steps and provide better accessibility - visitors will be able to enter through our historic medieval West Tower safely and appreciate its beauty. The planned works have been carefully designed to protect the historic fabric of our Grade I listed cathedral and ensure improved accessibility, without compromising the appearance and aesthetics of our site.
Our journey - In 2024 Bradford Cathedral began planning the Welcoming In project in response to urgent areas of repair identified by architects and surveyors.
During 2025 and 2026 we successfully secured significant grants for the project from major national funders like the Benefact Trust, the Garfield Weston Foundation, and the Laing Family Trust.
We also began to garner support from the Cathedral community.
This has been so important - but we are not there yet. A funding gap remains, and without further support some repairs may not go ahead. Your gift can help close that gap and bring these vital improvements within reach.
One Gift. Countless Welcomes.
Thank you for supporting our Welcoming In project.
