Story
Ever since the COVID pandemic began, Welbodi has continued to deliver critical healthcare programmes in Sierra Leone.
In partnership with the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health and Kings College London, we implemented the national rollout of a low-cost blood pressure device tailored to the needs of pregnant women in low income countries (https://cradletrial.org/).
In addition, at the Ola During Childrens Hospital, Sierra Leones only tertiary paediatric centre, we have continued to support essential refurbishment and postgraduate training for both doctors and nurses.
However, for small aid organisations such as ours, a knock-on effect of the pandemic has been the reduced availability of grant funding. Last week alone, the UK government announced further cuts of £500 million to its international humanitarian budget, totalling a reduction of approximately £4 billion (https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-56836430).
We are lucky to have secured funding from September 2021 to continue our work with Kings College and further build maternal health research in collaboration with Sierra Leones Ministry of Health. However, two of our core projects had been cancelled as a result of FCDO cuts.
With your support we can continue essential support and work towards reducing the maternal and infant mortality in Sierra Leone.
