Story

Ever since we conducted our first CNVR (catch-neuter-vaccinate-release) programme back in 2014, we have been dreaming of the day when we might be able to have our very own mobile neutering clinic, kitted out to international standards and providing nothing but the best for animals who fundamentally have nothing here in Sri Lanka.

(The above is our typical sweaty, dusty and often tropical-monsoon-filled set up! We are very reliant on the weather gods and it isn't the cleanest environment to do surgery in...)

This seemed so far out of reach way back then when it was just Janey, Malaka and Dr. Nuwan cruising around the laneways of south Sri Lanka in tuk tuks, scooping up street animals for veterinary treatment. However, we never let the dream slip away and when the pandemic rose its ugly head, rendering our outdoor CNVR programmes impossible due to gathering restrictions, it was the kick up the bum we needed to get this show on the road (literally!).

We have worked SO hard over the last year to make this dream a reality and, with the incredible support of Battersea, we managed to purchase our spangly new 40 foot (YES, 40 FOOT ) lorry after 8 years of waiting! There have been some major delays given the economic and political instability in Sri Lanka since the spring but we are now well on the way to having this thing kitted out and on the road by February.. Only thing is, we need your help to get over the finishing line

One of the big reasons we were so desperate to acquire a contained mobile unit was so that we could operate under gaseous anaesthesia. Most field clinics use injectable anaesthesia as standard (we have been doing it for years too!) but this is mostly out of necessity. It is not the safest form of anaesthesia and hasnt been used routinely in general veterinary practice in the UK, without oxygen support, since the 1990s (anyone remember the thiopentone days?!).

As vets and nurses, we really want to provide the safest experience possible for street dogs, and in our eyes, this means using gaseous anaesthesia and high quality monitoring equipment. We have managed to raise the funding for the floors, walls, doors etc; which, trust us, was no mean feat in todays economic climate. However, we are falling short at the very last hurdle and we need a leg up from our incredible supporters to ensure we can finish what we started and create a place where over 100,000 dogs can receive the highest standard of veterinary care over the next 10 years. We need you.

Your kind donations will be spent on surgical tables, gas anaesthetic machines, oxygen concentrators and anaesthetic monitoring equipment basically all of the bits that will make the loss of baby-making organs all the more comfortable for these dogs! We need to import these items from the UK so it is really important we can purchase them quickly as the boat journey and customs clearance will likely take 8 weeks.. EEK!

We realise we have asked you guys for so much over the years and, trust us when we say, it gets more and more awkward and uncomfortable every time we do it! But, if its any consolation, we think this is one of the most impactful things we have ever tried to do.

This vehicle will have the capacity to NEUTER, MICROCHIP, VACCINATE and EDUCATE over 100,000 animals, protecting them against deadly disease and preventing unwanted litters from being born onto the streets. It will address the canine overpopulation issue, reduce the number of sick or injured dogs on the streets (if youve ever been to Sri Lanka you might remember how heartbreaking it can be to witness) AND it will also protect the human community against the 100% fatal disease that is rabies. Personally, we think this is potentially THE most impactful donation anyone can make, helping hundreds of thousands of animals and people in one fail swoop!

If you can contribute and get us closer to our target then that would be so appreciated. We cant thank you enough for your continued support- this is the big one!!! Please share far and wide; it is one heck of a worthwhile cause (say the vets and animal lovers, haha- we are not biased at all!!)!

Thank you so very much!!!!!

"WECare are going to save the world, one animal at a time!" Janey Lowes, very optimistic founding member of WECare Worldwide. We dream of providing healthcare for all animals in desperate need of help around the world. Yes, we know it's a big dream, but anything is possible when we all come together! WECare Worldwide is an organisation set up by Westway Veterinary Group, the largest veterinary practice in the North of England. Ultimately, WECare Worldwide plan to extend veterinary services around the globe but initially will be concentrating on tacking the issues with the street dog population in Sri Lanka. It is estimated that there are up to 3 million street dogs in Sri Lanka. WECare Worldwide are in the process of carrying out a 5 year plan in which we will look to help eliminate rabies in the country and also reduce the numbers of unwanted street dogs. We will also treat any sick or injured street dogs.
