Story
Wave Café (We're All Valued Equally) is a vibrant café and arts centre bringing people with and without learning disabilities together in a truly inclusive, warm atmosphere. It was established to promote social inclusion and raise public awareness of the issues faced by people with learning difficulties. Teenagers from local schools and families come after school to participate in the arts programme. Young people with disabilities from local schools and colleges are part of the Internship programme, providing the opportunity to learn important work and life skills to develop independence.
The café, an independent charity, is based at the United Reformed Church, Queens Ave, N10 3NU and is open every Thursday from 10am to 5pm. Those attending can enjoy inclusive yoga, knitting and art sessions and delicious, freshly prepared meals. Occasional events such as pottery, games evenings, music sessions and baking also take place on a Thursday evening.
Wave Café showcases an alternative model of community where people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities spend time together. Attitudes are changed: those identifying with disability or difference see themselves as a natural part of the community, not separate. At the same time, those with limited experience of learning disability also benefit from being in an environment that celebrates difference.
Currently, we provide placement for six students with learning difficulties from the Harington Scheme. The work experience at the café is a valuable part of a learning programme designed to help them into employment, further education or a more rewarding life.
