Story

In September 2022, members of the Useful Vision team, Sophie, Ciara and Caitie (left-to-right), are taking on the challenge of walking Hadrian's Wall, a 135km hike from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend, to fundraise for Useful Vision.

Useful Vision is a charity that provides accessible activities, indispensable support and life-changing opportunities for visually impaired children and their families across the North East. Useful Vision was founded 17 years ago by our Trustees Nick and Rebecca Wilson. Their late son, Ben, was the inspiration behind the charity when he went blind at the age of 5. Like many parents they had a lot of questions, very little support and found it difficult to find activities that would be accessible and entertaining for Ben.

Rebecca says 'By establishing Useful Vision, we wanted to make access to these things easier for other families of blind and visually impaired children and their siblings across the North East. Today were helping hundreds of families across Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Teesside. Were here for support, to help answer your questions, offer advice and, most importantly, to give visually impaired children the best days out, ever!'

Every year, Useful Vision provides over 150 hours of innovative activities, tailored to the needs of visually impaired children, including race car driving, rock climbing, horse riding, arts and crafts, kayaking and so much more.

With your kind donation, Useful Vision can continue providing amazing activities and supporting families with visually impaired children. Every penny raised makes a huge difference - please consider donating today!

Testimonials

The Useful Vision staff and volunteers were amazing as always and their always kind, caring and attentive. Nothing is too much trouble for them.

We appreciate everything that Useful Vision do for us and all these amazing activities that we are very lucky to attend.

Absolutely fantastic morning with Useful Vision at the animation workshop. We are very thankful that we had the opportunity to attend today and look forward to attending more sessions in the future. The morning went really fast, and we all enjoyed all aspects of the session as a family and a group. Thank you so much.

An excellent North-East based charity providing blind and partially sighted children with fantastic opportunities, workshops, and days out. I personally attended many activities as a child at this charity and I was empowered and inspired to reach my full potential. Today useful vision continues to support and enrich the lives of visually impaired children across the North-East of England.
