Story

COVID-19 affected us in many different ways, but witnessing the lasting impact of loneliness within his friendship group led Andy Brassington to take a step towards change. Andy was on a mission to get people talking again – to build the community and connection that had been missing from many people’s lives over the pandemic. He didn’t know it yet, but that small step in 2022 would make a big difference – and just two years on, Walkers & Talkers has evolved into one of the biggest weekly social inclusion initiatives in the UK.

As with most purpose-led projects, Walkers & Talkers had humble beginnings. With his friends on board, Andy set out to address social isolation in the wider Bristol community, at first combining the passion he and his peers had for cricket by organising a walk and a talk around their local cricket ground – The Seat Unique Stadium. Andy wanted people to connect at the meetups, but he also wanted them to leave with the sense that they had learned something new along the way – which is where our Guest Speakers came in.

Our very first session combined a walk and talk around the grounds with a chance to hear from former Cricketer and current Gloucestershire County Cricket Club President David ‘Syd’ Lawrence. Syd’s stories from life as a player turned club president were truly inspiring, but it was his vulnerability and willingness to open up that served as a key turning point for Walkers & Talkers.

Just over two years since our first gathering, we’re still welcoming speakers and friends from all walks of life, and having a safe space to share the highs and lows of their week has become a lifeline for many of our now 200 members (and counting!).

We’re always looking for ways to grow whilst staying true to our original purpose, so speaker sessions have evolved beyond sport, and are reflective of the diverse community we welcome every week. From Cricketing legend Graham Gooch to Lord-Lieutenant of Bristol, Peaches Golding, the unique experiences and insights of every guest speaker sparks thought-provoking conversation and leaves a lasting impression on our community.

What started out as a weekly walk has flourished into a social staple for our ever-expanding group. We celebrated our second anniversary by doing what we do best – a sponsored walk raising nearly £4000 to continue celebrating social incluision. And our ambitions haven’t stopped there; this essential support enabled us to facilitate inspiring talks, monthly lunches, book swaps and more!

After our successful partnership with the Somerset Cricket Foundation and launching more walking and talking opportunities in Taunton, we are determined to create a ripple effect – with a Walkers & Talkers group in every county. But we can only get there with your support. Big or small, your donation will go towards keeping Walkers & Talkers a free event for our community to enjoy, whilst supporting our exciting plans to develop our initiative.

Thank you to everyone who has continued to support us throughout our journey, we wouldn’t be where we are without you.
