Loneliness and social isolation are chronic problems in the elderly in the North East. An estimated 50,000 pensioners in the region are chronically lonely and are 50% more likely to die prematurely than people with good social networks. This means loneliness is as big a mortality risk as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

Many are dog lovers and when they ask for a furry friend from Wag & Company, they get the bonus of a very nice two legged one at the same time. There are many people in need and also lovely case studies; the relationship between Friendship Dog Sandie and her new friend Mrs Doreen Ainsley who she visits in her own home in Morpeth is one. Doreen always had labradors and collies, her house is full of photos, but she is no longer able to have a dog of her own so she really loves her weekly cuddle with Sandie pictured above.

Our group of runners will be training right up until the event in September, whatever the weather; on dark mornings, after work or over the weekend. But they need your support.
