Story
This year, UnityMK invites compassionate individuals to step out of their comfort zones and raise vital funds by taking part in our powerful Big Sleepout challenge.
Spend one night sleeping outside and gain a brief but thought-provoking insight into the challenges people face when forced to sleep rough.
Why are we doing this?
UnityMK supports members of the Milton Keynes community who are experiencing homelessness or facing crisis. We rely on vital fundraising to continue providing essential services, and events like this make a real difference to the lives of our guests. Like Kane's story below:
Kane - came to UnityMK after being asked to leave his home when his mental health declined. Falling just £250 behind on rent, he didn’t realise he could challenge the eviction and quietly accepted it.
We welcomed him into our Winter Night Shelter, offering safety and guidance when he needed it most. With support, Kane learned his rights and was quickly referred to Shelter MK accommodation, where he was offered a room within a week giving him much-needed stability.
Our team also encouraged Kane to reconnect with his GP and resume his anxiety medication. As his confidence grew, he was able to return to work, supported with transport and ongoing care.
Kane’s story highlights how easily people can fall into crisis—and how the right support at the right time can help someone rebuild their life.
This years Sleepout is especially meaningful as we mark 15 years of our night shelter service.
We’re aiming to raise £8,000 - which could help fund a full winter season of hot meals for our night shelter guests.
