Story
In the morning of Monday 6th February, a deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Türkiye, near Gaziantep close to the border with Syria, affecting millions of people including refugees and internally displaced families. Less than 12 hours later, a second powerful earthquake hit the region.
The earthquake has now killed several thousand people across Türkiye and Syria, with thousands more injured. Entire buildings have collapsed, homes have been destroyed and critical infrastructure, like roads and bridges, have been damaged. Many of those affected are Syrians who remain displaced in their own country and living in flimsy shelters, tents and partially destroyed buildings.
UNHCR has rapidly scaled up its emergency operations across the region and is working hard to assess the urgent needs of those that have been affected. Right now, UNHCR teams are on the ground in both Türkiye and Syria, ready to respond and help provide lifesaving aid, including clothing and tents, to survivors wherever possible.
But so much more support is needed and we cannot do this alone. UNHCR relies on donations from refugee supporters like you. Together we can help provide emergency relief to those affected by this devastating earthquake.
Your donations can make a difference:
£40.40 could help provide a winter coat to 5 people affected by the earthquake in Türkiye
£81 could help provide one month of cash assistance to a family of four to help them buy what they need the most
£242 could help provide emergency items, including winter jackets and clothing to a family in Syria
Please give today. Your support will help save lives.
