Story

Every day, women and girls spend 200 million hours walking to collect water for their families. That's 8.3 million days. More than 22,800 years. Its hard to get your head around numbers that large, so start instead with 6km.

6km, a little more than 3.7 miles, is the average round trip distance women and children in the developing world walk for water.

Over the next six weeks were challenging you to #WalkForWater by walking 6km (3.7 miles) to raise money and awareness for The Washing Machine Project.

You can walk with friends, family, colleagues, a partner, a dog or perhaps you'd prefer to walk on your own, however you chose to take part, you'll be supporting our work to manufacture and distribute manual, off-grid washing machines which reduces the amount of water needed to wash clothes by 70%, while reducing the time spent by 50% when compared to hand-washing clothes.

Mothers and daughters often walk their 6km barefoot or in rubber sandals to collect water from polluted rivers and ponds. More than 3 million children and nearly 14 million women walk more than 30 minutes to collect water. And they often make that trip more than once a day!

On the way home from the water source, its even harder. Try carrying 20 litres of water in a container: that's 20kgs of weight!

But would that 20 litres be enough water for your family to drink, cook, bathe, and wash for a day?15 litres a day is considered the bare minimum water supply for only one person. So, you might have to walk to the waterhole many times a day!

The Washing Machine Project aims to help empower women with the time to take charge of their lives. When women rise, we all rise.

Lets get walking! Don't forget to tag #WalkForWater and our accounts on social media with your walking pictures and videos.

Thank you and good luck!
