Trevor Weeks starting undertaking wildlife rescue and conservation work in 1985 when, as a young lad of 13, he joined the local conservation volunteers. This led to him finding two oiled guillemots on the beach at Cow Gap near Beach Head and where he was then introduced to a lady called Meta Mann who ran the Seaford Bird Hospital from her home.
This started a passion for Trevor for helping local wildlife which has grown beyond recognition!
Trevor spent the first 10 years volunteering with various organisations learning about rescues and various species. As many individuals and organisations closed down it became difficult to find anyone willing to take in the casualties locally. Before transporting casualties longer distances Trevor would seek veterinary help and treatment to avoid unnecessary suffering.
After running up a significant veterinary bill Trevor was challenged to set up East Sussex Wildlife Rescue as a voluntary group to fund raise and pay for the costs of helping local wildlife. A public meeting was organised and the group was formed.
By 2005 WRAS was a Registered Charity and 2010 WRAS opened it current hospital at Whitesmith.
The charity now operates a hospital capable of dealing with over 400 casualties at a time, and has a small fleet of ambulances to help with the rescue and collection of casualties.
In 2024 WRAS deal with over 6000 casualties for the first time and each years get busier and busier.
The award winning charity has only been able to survive so long thanks to the generous donations and help of its supporters who give so kind and generously.
Your support is needed to ensure that the charity can continue for another 40 years and last well past Trevor's ability to keep rescuing wildlife.
Will you help his legacy and future of East Sussex WRAS!
