Story
National Running Week will take place for the first time in Scotland with the aim of raising funds for Athletics Trust Scotland and celebrating the positive impact that running and athletics has on those who take part. You can read some of our amazing Transforming Lives stories here.
Sadly though, research shows that people who live in poverty and are in ethnically and culturally diverse communities are underrepresented in athletics and less likely to take part than those who dont. Further, participation levels are lower amongst people with a disability. Whilst 1 in 5 people in Scotland have a disability, a staggering 80% of those want to take part in more sport and physical activity.
By being part of National Running Week you will help us successfully deliver the Transforming Lives Community Fund to the above community groups. The fund will support local communities in Scotland to fund start up kits for local running and athletics groups in priority areas and provide equipment such as wheelchair or frame running bikes and to support the development of volunteer coaches in these underserved communities.
ATS Chairman Graeme Jack said:
We are delighted to launching the National Running Week in Scotland. We hope that walkers, joggers, runners and pushers from around the country will sign up and help us raise much needed funds for our Transforming Lives Project that will support those at a significant disadvantage. For the 5k, we encourage individuals to record their time and we also want to encourage groups and clubs to organise a 5k, take part in an interclub 5k or even plan a mobmatch parkrun!
Throughout the week there will be a programme of events such as webinars, a silent auction, competitions and a 5k challenge.
In order to take part, simply register your interest here. Once registered, a pack of goodies is available to help with the organisation and promotion of your event. All the funds raised go straight to the charity. For indiviudals, groups or businesses taking part there is a handy pack of tips available to download from the official National Running Week webpage.
