Story
Were aiming to raise £10,000 which will allow us to complete crucial ground works that will channel water away from the animal housing into the sump. Your support will allow young people continued access to this incredible facility for many years to come. The Farm is an urban oasis nestled in the heart of Wandsworth, London. It was opened over 10 years ago with the generous help of Toms Trust, a charity established to help fight the ever-growing reality of youth crime in London. Toms Trust was launched in memory of Tom ap Rhys Pryce by his family, friends, fiancé and former employers at Linklaters LLP. Toms Trust is volunteer run with no overheads, so every single penny raised is passed directly to the most effective youth organisations and projects across London.
Toms Farm is a miniature working farm that offers young people and the local community the opportunity to access the countryside environment, right here in London. We are passionate about educating the next generation on food and farming and the importance of sustainability. Down at the farm we offer accredited qualifications through City and Guilds, BTEC and AQA in Animal Care, Horticulture and Land-based studies to both internal and external students. The farm is also well established as a therapeutic resource providing for some of the most challenging and challenged young people at the Academy.
Nightingale Community Academy (NCA), a special needs provision for boys aged 5-19 diagnosed with Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties (SEMH). The majority of pupils reside in borough, with a large minority coming from neighbouring Lambeth. We also have pupils from Croydon, Richmond, Kingston, Sutton, Kensington & Chelsea and Merton. Pupil Premium numbers are high at almost 70%. In 2017 Orchard Hill College collocated a centre for post 16 students with Profound, Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) at the school to take advantage of the excellent vocational resources on site. The NCA Vocational Centre provides specialist settings through which we deliver Hair & Beauty, Animal Husbandry, Horticulture, Land Based Studies, Mechanical Engineering and Construction. Our vision can be summarized simply: Everybody has the right to learn, to be respected, to feel safe and to be fairly treated. The children and families we serve have all experienced difficulty in the education or social care systems; many are embroiled in the criminal justice system. We aim to ensure that our young people are well prepared at key transition points and supported to make choices that prepare them for working opportunities in later life. We provide a high number of specialist led interventions in response to the fact that all of our SEMH pupils experience significant barriers to learning e.g. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder 46%, History of Domestic Violence 37%, Autistic Spectrum Disorder 25%, Speech and Language Difficulties 43%. We work with the local Clinical Commissioning Group to increase access to therapies in an effort to tackle issues with attachment, substance misuse and related criminal exploitation that all too routinely follows as children age.
At Nightingale Community Academy (NCA) we offer a full-time curriculum to pupils aged 5-19 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) named as the primary need on their Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP). In addition, post 16 students with Profound & Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) access full-time, accredited courses from unit awards to entry-level. Our offer is further
extended to post 16 students from the D Deaf community. A full range of traditional and vocational opportunities is supplemented by volunteering places for young people aged 12 18. These places are not limited to children and young adults living with SEND so volunteers from the local community are often hard at work on Duke of Edinburgh awards at weekends. All of our work is underpinned by a therapeutic offer that is delivered by a skilled team of professionals, e.g. Education Psychologists, Speech & Occupational Therapists, Talking Therapists & a Mental Health Nurse. We count a number of professional agencies including CAMHS, the Youth Offending Team and Social Care as day-to-day partners and we boast a highly skilled team of teaching and support staff with specialist ability where the most challenging behaviour is concerned.
Toms Farm at Nightingale Community Academy is a pivotal part of our offer and we hope you feel able to make a small donation to help keep this incredible resource for future young people to benefit from.
